Emulation essay

Part 1 It was a chilling morning in northwestern Kansas. A man, his wife and two children (boy and girl) returned to their home since it was showering and they decided to stay indoors. Additionally, life was not easy at the plains and many families relocated to other regions. As the man moved around his house, he noted that from a distance a small partition of fog and transparent cloud rotating and suddenly vanished. Also, it was coming towards their house. Suddenly, ferocious hail storm hit the house and the area around the house looked as if it was snowing. The man feared for the safety of his family; so he decided to read an old newspaper. The man became occupied such that he did not notice when the storm was approaching. The winds were blowing at about 200 miles per hour and the created pressure of about fifteen tons on the side of the house. Suddenly, he noticed that rain water beneath his feet. He grabbed some sheets and tried to cover the spaces on the door of his house. The rain shingled the roof as well as threatened to break the entrance. They all decided to stay in their dining room. The man became worried and stood at the window and he tried to wipe the windowpane that was clouded with moisture (Sebastian 259). It was raining so heavily such that it was difficult to view of far-off cabins. The lighting stuck and filled the house with blinding glare. This forced the children to stay close to the mother. The man tried to calm down his family but it was all in vain since the electricity went off a several times. After five hours, the house was filled with water. The family found a secured high place and they had nothing to cover themselves. It rained for five days and the water levels in the house reduced after three days. They were all unconscious but they were helped by good Samaritans. More than eighteen people died while about one hundred and fifty lost their homes. In addition, the hail stormed damaged police vehicles, trucks as well as ambulance units (The Tornado Project). Most of houses had collapsed while car windows were shattered. Part 2 Men and Cartoons by Jonathan Lethem contain nine short stories and the writer a lot of fictional words. The stories do not reflect the title of the book. â€Å"The Spray† is about man and woman who found a chemical compound, if sprayed it could expose things that had got lost (Mark). Someone had broken into the couple’s house and took the fax machine, the television and other things. The couple called the police. Four police officers and a dog visited the crime scene. They debriefed the couple and brought out a small canister and sprayed around the house. Before spraying, they masked their dog. The police officers explained to the couple as to why they were spraying the house; that is they were making â€Å"lost things visible† (Jonathan 48).After the spray settled, some spots in the house started glowing; this indicated what the burglar had stolen. It was noted that jewelry box, camera, walkman and pair of cull links were missing. Although the missing things wer e visible, one of the police officers explained to the couple that the things could not be touched since they were no longer there. The police officers accidentally forgot the canister and Addie took it. Addie sprayed Lucinda. An image of Lucinda was formed; it had short hair, the head laid on Charles’ shoulder. Lucinda and Charles wrestled for the spray and it went off. After the spray settled, images of Addie and Lucinda were formed. The story below borrows characters from Men and Cartoons. Lucinda keeps her halo on the side of the bed. Addie is able to see the glowing arch of the halo when sleeping. The curtains are white they hang down to the floor; so it swishes softy in the gentle wind. Addie and Lucinda do not live on the beach, but they are close to it. When Addie wakes up, he likes watching Lucinda stretch her arms and yawn. Sometimes Lucinda hugs her shoulders and sits like a cat on her thighs while the hands are in front. Addie pretends for some time that he is asleep as Lucinda enjoys the sunlight as well as the breeze and wriggles her shoulders. Afterwards, Lucinda fits the halo on her head and rises from the bed. Once Lucinda’s toes touch the floor, she sways like she weighs nothing while Addie looks at her (Jonas). Lucinda kneels at the window and the birds continue to sing as combs her hair. Lucinda strokes a hundred times on side and does the same to the other side. Addie watches her falls into late morning dreams and he snaps out of it. Afterwards, Lucinda starts singing while eating a grapefruit. Addie decides get of the bed and Lucinda leans on the bed and greets him (Jonas). They both have breakfast and fold clean clothes together. Addie starts to think why he has good things; for instance, he asks himself why deserves Lucinda. Lucinda freshens up and leaves for; she later kisses Addie goodbye. Addie decides to get out of the house since he is jobless. Addie looks for his pants in the laundry hamper and later goes to look for job (Jonas). Addie decides to hang out with Samuel and Naomi. He takes few beers with them. Addie and Samuel sit on a sofa and start staring at the people moving and later Naomi joins them (Jonas). Samuel and Naomi â€Å"are sharing a root beer float, off by the dining area. Theyre not bad people. They love each other, Im sure. Maybe people like them have a bad rap, or maybe they were just born into a bad situation† (Jonas). It is not Samuel and Naomi’s fault, and at least those Addie and Lucinda have someone to love. The music is loud enough that there is no need to talk. There is hissing sound of people skating which reminds Addie of the ocean’s wave. Someone could think that the â€Å"maze of green plastic stars above† them is the real (Jonas). Outside where they were sitting, the stars were shining while the people were shuffling to their flatcars in little small close groups and there seemed to be loneliness. Addie asks Lucinda, â€Å"What happens if you lose your wings?† Lucinda sighs and says she cannot fly (Jonas). Afterwards, the music is changed. There skating noises as couples are skating together and some of them leave the floor while others hold each close. Lucinda extends her arms around Addie, Samuel and Naomi and they all glare at the light. The light of the colors keep on changing slowly and it seems as if they are not changing at all; the light flows across their face, lighting their cheeks and brushing through their hair. Lucinda watches Addie with her golden eyes as if they were alone. Addie takes Lucinda’s hands in and leans away. Lucinda follows Addie and they spin together below the cover of Lucinda’s arms. Addie wants to ask Lucinda why he deserves to have her love. Addie wants to find out what Lucinda thinks about their world â€Å"that makes it worth being† where they are (Jonas). Although it seems to be simple, Lucinda finds hard to explain. According to Addie, their world should be cheaper knock-off to Lucinda. This because the love Addie has for Lucinda can give her must just be a â€Å"shadow of what she knew† before they met together (Jonas). Part 3 The Nick Adams Stories by Ernest Hemingway has five sections. The Big Two-Hearted River can be found in the soldier home section (Ernest 47). The story focuses Nick Adams’ healing process after World War I. Based on the story above story, Adam jailed for forty years because of drug trafficking and child abuse. The day he is released there is no person to pick him. Adam walks sixty miles from the prison and later decides to walk across the field of corn to reach the nearby town. Adam was lucky to find a stream of water and abandoned house. He freshened up and looked for something to eat. Afterwards, he moved along the stream and to find place to camp. There was no person that Adam could talk to; so he could spend most of the time thinking. In order to avoid thinking, Adam distracted himself by doing something constructive like weeding around his camp and trying to learn more about nature. When Adams went to bed, he tried to recall about his family as well as the close friends he had before he was imprisoned. At times he used to curse himself and tried to think of the good things that he did to people. In addition, before he went to bed, he always hoped that he would find someone to befriend. Every action meant that Adam was fragile and he could breakdown any time; he became frustrated Adams’ reaction after his first fish. Adams calmed himself down going to the shore and smoking a cigarette. Every morning Adams would wake up and start fishing. After taking breakfast, he will go to the forest to find bait that is grasshoppers. As Adam interacts with nature e.g. fishing, he condition continues to stabilize. That is Adam no longer focuses on negative things like he was hopeless after the war. He tries to learn more on the environment instead of watching thing go wrong around him. After catching a small fish, he releases it due to the fact that he would catch another big fish. Additionally, if the big fish escapes, Adams decides to catch medium sized fish. As time goes on, Adams loses interest in fishing and he hopes to get a book and read it. Works Cited Ernest, Hemingway. The Nick Adams Stories. Amereon Limited, 1990. Jonas, Hurwitz. Civilisation and Savagery in William Goldings - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1551 Downloads: 10 Date added: 2019/04/12 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: Lord of The Flies Essay Did you like this example? â€Å"Civilization is like a thin layer of ice upon a deep ocean of chaos and darkness.† (Werner Herzog) This quote explains and represents the novel, Lord of the Flies in many ways. In Lord of the Flies, written by the Nobel Prize winner William Golding, identity and civilization occur as fragile parts of society. The book was written after World War II, and the aftermath of this event heavily influenced the people, especially the authors and poets. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Civilisation and Savagery in William Goldings" essay for you Create order Golding wrote the novel based on his own experiences, as he fought in World War II, he was part of the Navy and he was involved in the invasion of Normandy. He discovered the true nature of humans; he was disappointed in humankind. (Spitz, 22) The novel draws attention to the loss of identity and the transition between civilization and savagery with the help of symbolism. Golding shows a world of violence and moral desolation through his book to the reader. The main conflict is between two characters, Ralph and Jack, who are the representatives of civilization and savagery. Their continuous fighting for power has an effect on the rest of the boys throughout the novel, as they are slowly losing their humanity and they sink further and further into chaos. The book starts with a plane crashing into an uninhabited island. A group of English boys are the passengers, and the first two characters, who are introduced, are Ralph and Piggy. Ralph is the one who discovers that they are on an island, which is described very appealingly: â€Å"Out there, perhaps a mile away, the white surf flinked on a coral reef, and beyond that the open sea was dark blue. Within the irregular arc of coral the lagoon was still as a mountain lakeblue of all shades and shadowy green and purple. The beach between the palm terrace and the water was a thin stick, endless apparently, for to Ralphs left the perspectives of palm and beach and water drew to a point at infinity;† (Golding, 6) The island seems good enough due to the fact that it has food –fruits, pigs to hunt -, trees and shelter. It is possible that it is a biblical symbol for The Garden of Eden. Before the fall of mankind, The Garden of Eden was considered as a paradise, just like the boys considered the island as a paradise, before they ruined it. (Bufkin, 43) As the story develops, they sink further and further into savagery slowly drifting away from the civilized society, and eventually burn down the island. The scar that runs through the island symbolizes how destructive mankind is. As they are bathing in the lagoon they find a conch, which is the first symbol of civilization. Ralph, for Piggy’s suggestion, blows it to gather the rest of the boys. As everyone wonders out from the forest to the sound of the conch, the reader encounters the rest of the characters. The biggest contrast is between Ralph and Jack, who become the representatives of civilization and savagery. Ralph is the one who symbolizes order and civilization. He is described as the typical and perfect English boy: he has blonde hair, blue eyes and he is considered attractive. The conch is associated with him; he is someone to be respected and that is why he is elected as the leader. The conch is a symbol for power because whoever has it can speak up, and everybody has the same amount of respect and right when they are holding it: â€Å"Ill give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when hes speaking. [†¦]And he wont be interrupted: Except by me. (Golding, 24) Ralph also represents democracy; he wants everyone to be the part of the civilized society he plans to establish during their time spent on the island. Despite that, his powers are limited as it depends on order and rules. In the beginning, he becomes a leader to survive, but toward the end of the story, his ego comes before survival as he lost his civilized side. His new identity does not fit for leading, he fails to unite the boys and he is unable to bring order among them. He appoints Jack to be the leader of the hunters, who later on tries to convince the boys to leave Ralph and go with him, and at some point he succeeds. He and Ralph share an odd relationship; they are constantly fighting from the beginning, but at the same time they have respect for one another. Jack represents dictatorship and savagery. In the beginning, he tries to â€Å"sell† himself with his singing ability and his leadership of the choir boys. He tries to prove the others that he would be a good choice as a leader. He eventually succeeds and becomes the new leader of the boys. Jack’s priority is killing and he attracts the boys to him with this. They cannot live out their â€Å"need† for killing with Ralph, so they eventually leave him for Jack. At the beginning of the story, he hesitates when he has to kill a pig, but as the story develops he becomes hungry for hunting. He becomes more violent and aggressive: _Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood._ (Golding, 52). This quote shows that after he kills his first pig, it is clear that he no longer cares or feels guilty about what he has done. He realizes that he has the ability to destroy something, like life, and this is something they can dominate with over the island. The boys also choose Jack over Ralph as a leader, because he believes them when they inform him about the â€Å"Beast†. Although, this so-called â€Å"Beast† is only a creature of their imagination, Jack does what Ralph failed to do as a leader. He does not believe in the â€Å"Beast† – he is using â€Å"if† in his speech every time they talk about it -, but he knows the others do: â€Å"There isn’t a snake-thing. But if there was a snake we’d hunt it and kill it. We’re going to hunt pigs to get meat for everybody. And we’ll look for the snake too-â€Å" (Golding, 36). While Ralph straight up refuses the idea that there might be a â€Å"Beast† on the island, Jack manipulates the boys, with his carefully chosen words, implying to the others that he believes what they said. Later on, he starts using words like â€Å"will† and â€Å"snake† instead of â€Å"if† and â€Å"snake-thing†, which implies that he acknowledged the existence of the Beast. Ralph might be the one who takes responsibility for everything they have done, but Jack is the one who believes in them and actually has an opinion about this â€Å"creature† the boys made up. For them, their belief on the â€Å"Beast† is stronger and stronger as they become more savage. They do not find Ralph very appealing as a leader anymore, especially after this conversation; the only opinion he has about the â€Å"Beast† is rejection and that â€Å"there isn’t a beastie†. T he Beast can be the representation of the true evil within humans as well, which is on the surface as soon as they lose everything that connects them to civilization. Although, the facts that they put on their â€Å"face paint† made of mud and clay, slaughter a boar and dance around the fire like a primitive tribe, indicate that they have turned into complete savages. During this scene, they mistake Simon for the Beast and they kill him. Other turning points of the book are when Piggy’s glasses and the conch breaks. Piggy’s glasses were the symbol of intelligence and science, because the boys were able to light the fire with them. The glasses can also signify as a window which can distinguish good from evil. Piggy used his glasses not only to see, but to decide what is good for all of them. He was more mature than the others, and he had the knowledge of leadership. When Jack broke and stole his glasses, he lost not only his eyesight, but he also his ability to differentiate between what is good and what is evil. Civilization comes to its end when Piggy dies, and the conch breaks. The shell was the last thing which held the boys together and it was the last pillar of democracy, which is also destroyed with the conch: â€Å"the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist.† (Golding, 181) Taking everything into consideration, Lord of the Flies is a novel that shows us how evil is hidden in everyone, which only needs time and some change of circumstances to show itself. In the case of the boys, this change was the island. They were alone in an uninhabited island without adult supervision, and despite the fact that they were trying to stay civilized, the freedom they possessed completely changed them. Being civilized is not natural or necessary, unless you want to survive. This shows us that we need rules to stay alive. Golding uses the main characters to show, that humankind is more evil than good. The continuous power struggle between Ralph and Jack results in their loss of identity; they shred off their â€Å"masks† as the proud English boys and replaced it with savagery

Relationship of Neanderthals to Modern Humans free essay sample

After extracting ancient DNA from the 40,000-year-old bones of Neanderthals, scientists have obtained a draft sequence of the Neanderthal genome, yielding important new insights into the evolution of modern humans. No other ancient people have aroused more controversy and confusion over the last century and a half than have the Neanderthals (3,4). There is an on-going debate as to whether they should be considered Homo sapiens. While the idea that modern humans originated in Africa and spread out to other parts of the world is widely accepted, several scenarios have been proposed to account for the replacement of neanderthal populations. The multi regional hypothesis holds that neanderthal populations in Eurasia and Africa were held together by gene flow. Fossil and genetic evidence supports an African origin for Modern Humans (1,3,5,9,10). A decade after scientists first cracked the human genome, researchers announced that they have done the same for Neanderthals, the species of hominid that existed from roughly 400,000 to 30,000 years ago, when their closest relatives, early modern humans, may have driven them to extinction (1,3,5,9,10). We will write a custom essay sample on Relationship of Neanderthals to Modern Humans or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Led by ancient-DNA expert Svante Paabo of Germanys Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, scientists reconstructed about 60% of the Neanderthal genome by analyzing tiny chains of ancient DNA extracted from bone fragments of three female Neanderthals excavated in the late 1970s and early 80s from a cave in Croatia (6,8). The bones are 38,000 to 44,000 years old. The genetic information turned up some intriguing findings, indicating, for instance, that at some point after early modern humans migrated out of Africa, they mingled and mated with Neanderthals, possibly in the Middle East or North Africa as much as 80,000 years ago (5,7,10). If that is the case, it occurred significantly earlier than scientists who support the interbreeding hypothesis would have expected. Comparisons with DNA from modern humans show that some Neanderthal DNA has survived to the present (3,4,7). Moreover, by analyzing ancient DNA alongside modern samples, scientists were able to identify a handful of genetic changes that evolved in modern humans sometime after their ancestors and Neanderthals diverged, 440,000 to 270,000 years ago (2,4). Researchers compared the Neanderthal genome with the genomes of five living people: one San from southern Africa, one Yoruba from West Africa, one Papua New Guinean, one Han Chinese and one French person (2,4,6). Scientists discovered that 1% to 4% of the latter three DNA samples is shared with Neanderthals — proof that Neanderthals and early modern humans interbred. The absence of Neanderthal DNA in the genomes of the two present-day Africans indicates that interbreeding occurred after some root population of early modern humans left Africa but before the species evolved into distinct groups in Europe and Asia (1,3,5,9,10). All studies of Neanderthal genomic DNA use material obtained from fossilized Neanderthal bones that are tens of thousands of years old. As one might expect, the quality of the material that can be recovered from such specimens is very poor, as DNA degrades over time. Consequently, there is wide variability in DNA preservation among available Neanderthal specimens, and most Neanderthal bones yield no usable DNA (2,3,4). When present, Neanderthal genomic DNA is recovered in short (50- to 100-bp) fragments (2,3,4) The information content of Neanderthal DNA is also degraded: Individual nucleotides are subject to chemical modification, with deamination of cytosine to uracil the most common lesion (2,4). Moreover, the fragments of Neanderthal genomic DNA are mixed with microbial contaminants that constitute gt;90% of the recovered DNA. The amount of DNA damage and microbial contamination are dependent on ambient environmental conditions: The ancient specimens that have provided the most intact DNA are mammoth remains recovered from permafrost. These specimens often include preserved hair shafts and soft tissues from which relatively high-quality DNA can be recovered (2,4,5). None of the Neanderthal specimens providing the DNA for whole-genome sequencing approach this level of preservation (2,4,5,6). In addition to these challenges, ancient specimens frequently become contaminated with modern human DNA during handling and DNA extraction.
